MAHEBOURG MUSEUM THE ART OF MEMORY 68 National History Museum of Mauritius A NEVER-ENDING UNE HISTOIRE SANS FIN Through a tall openwork gate on Royal road, you can just make out an old colonial residence at the far end of the grounds. It houses the Mahébourg Naval Museum, which at the turn of the 21 st century was renamed the National History Museum of Mauritius in an effort to construct a collective memory. Depuis la rue Royal, un haut portail ajouré laisse deviner au fond d’un parc une ancienne demeure coloniale. Elle abrite le musée naval de Mahébourg, rebaptisé avec le siècle « Musée national de l’histoire de Maurice ». Un changement de nom qui correspond à une tentative d’édifier une mémoire collective.
