FEMALE SOLIDARITY UNE POUR TOUTES, TOUTES POUR UNE ! After a thirty-year career in the Beachcomber Group, Florence Decotter and Patricia Parsooramen-Auffray have made history by becoming the first women appointed as hotel managers. BY VIRGINIE LUC - PHOTOGRAPH NATHALIE BAETENS It was an enormous surprise!” Florence remembers the flood of emotions, wavering between joy and apprehension, that overcame her on the announcement of her appointment to the head of Mauricia Beachcomber Resort & Spa on 1 July 2021. Three months later, Patricia was appointed manager of Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Stupefaction and tears for the woman who had “not even dared to dream of it”. And yet, their careers and theirloyalty inspire admiration. In the early 1990s, the hotel industry was in full expansion. Florence started out at Shandrani Beachcomber as bookings manager. Patricia began as a receptionist at Paradis Beachcomber before joining Dinarobin Beachcomber when it opened in 2001. “We grew up together professionally,” smiles Patricia, “and have always felt that strong sense of belonging that runs through the Group.” A passion for their profession, the love of a job well done, and unfailingly high standards (starting with themselves) is what drives them. “What I find very stimulating is that everyone’s skills are recognised. So you must persevere,” Florence advises young recruits. The advantage of these two managers lies in the finesse of their approach: patience, team spirit, a sympathetic ear and a positive attitude. Preoccupied with equity and justice, they make sure “no one is left by the wayside”. This community spirit also works between the two women. “I’m a fairly impulsive person and I appreciate Florence’s moderation and gentleness. She has given me some excellent advice.” Florence and Patricia, both married, with two and three children respectively, insist on the solid foundation their family provides, enabling them to juggle three lives in one. Since then, two other women have been appointed to head the Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury: Queensly Periatamby Fong, Hotel Manager, and Isabelle Bouvier, General Manager. Trois mois plus tard, Patricia se voit confier la direction du Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Stupeur et larmes pour celle qui n’avait « pas même effleuré ce rêve ». Et pourtant, leur parcours et leur fidélité forcent l’admiration. Au début des années 1990, le secteur de l’hôtellerie est en plein essor. Florence fait ses armes au Shandrani Beachcomber comme responsable des réservations. Patricia débute au poste de réceptionniste au Paradis Beachcomber avant d’intégrer, à son ouverture en 2001, le Dinarobin Beachcomber. « Nous avons grandi professionnellement ensemble et ressenti ce fort sentiment d’appartenance qui traverse le Groupe », sourit Patricia. Une passion pour leur métier, le goût du travail bien fait et une exigence à toute épreuve (à commencer envers elles-mêmes) les animent. « Ce qui est très stimulant, c’est que les compétences de chacun sont reconnues. Il faut donc de la persévérance », conseille Florence aux jeunes recrues. L’atout des deux managers réside dans la finesse de leur approche : patience, écoute, esprit d’équipe, attitude positive. Soucieuses d’équité et de justice, elles veillent à « ne laisser personne à la traîne ». Cette solidarité vaut entre les deux femmes. « Je suis plutôt d’une nature impulsive et j’apprécie la mesure et la douceur de Florence. Elle m’a prodigué de précieux conseils ». Florence et Patricia, mariées et chacune mère de deux et trois enfants, insistent sur le socle familial et affectif très solide qui leur a permis de mener de front, trois vies en une.
